DBS CHECKS

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is the service that processes all criminal record checks in England and Wales. A DBS check provides information about a person’s criminal history, it used to be called a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

A DBS check can help an organisation decide whether a person is a suitable candidate to volunteer for them, however only certain roles and activities are eligible for checks.  Further information about DBS checks can be found here

Having a criminal record does NOT mean that a person can’t volunteer. Such decisions will depend on factors such as the type of conviction, how recent it was and the kind of volunteering being considered. A volunteer with a criminal record is only required to reveal past convictions for certain roles. (Please see here for further information)

One Westminster can provide standard DBS police checks, as well as enhanced DBS checks for anyone involved in supporting or caring for children or vulnerable adults.

Changes to One Westminster's DBS service

Changes to One Westminster's DBS service

Following personnel and capacity changes, One Westminster has made changes to the DBS Service we provide to local organisations.

One Westminster will continue to do checks for other organisations, so if you wish to use One Westminster as an umbrella body you can send applicants to our offices on Wednesdays or Thursdays to fill in the form and have their identity documents checked.  Unfortunately however we can no longer provide an outreach or evening/weekend service.

If you have been trained by us as a nominated document checker, please continue to send your applications to the DBS Administrator in the post for counter signing and processing.  We will not be able to provide any further training for new members of staff to become nominated document checkers.

Please contact the DBS Administrator on 020 7535 0495 on Wednesdays and Thursdays or leave a voicemail.  For urgent queries outside of these hours, please contact the main switchboard on 020 7723 1216 and ask to speak to a member of the Volunteer Outreach Service.

DBS checks for volunteers are free, although if you are an organisation using One Westminster as an ‘umbrella body’ there is an administrative charge.
